Standing Wave Snow, January 25, 2010

The sequence of radar images shows snow apparently being generated by a standing atmospheric wave induced by the ridge of high elevation along the north shore of Lake Superior. Other areas of lighter snow are moving south or southeast while a stronger band of snow remains nearly stationary. Usually the downstream side of the wave and the associated upward vertical motion forms farther downstream so that the heavier snow falls southeast of Duluth, MN and the city of Superior, WI. This is a rare case.
