The Dreaded Dry Pocket, January 5, 2022

National Weather Service Radar image on January 5, 2022

The preceding image valid shortly after midnight shows a persistent dry pocket over Duluth, MN that lasted almost three hours before the precipitation finally collapsed in on the dry air. I hate it when this happens! You can loose a lot of snowfall. The good news is that the story has a happy ending. Once the snow filled in the hole, several hours of moderate to heavy snow ensued with the heaviest snow concentrated in the same place where the void in precipitation persisted. The following radar animation shows a stubborn snow-free area holding on for dear life but eventually collapsing.
